View Full Version : Craigslist posting piss me off... anyone else?

Especially when I see postings for EXPIRED car seats. OMG it makes me so livid.
http://chicago.craigslist.org/nwc/bab/1263027476.html
I just emailed that lady this:
"Just FYI, if it was manufactured in 2003, it expires in 2009. The only Britax that has a 9 year life span is the Frontier, the others are 6 years. Didn't you check the date of manufacture before you bought it? I'd be very upset if I bought a supposedly brand new car seat for $269 only to find out it was already 3 years old. Whatever store you purchased it from should be reported to the BBB.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wvCRz7BRAM0"
It just makes me so crazy, I'm going to start flagging all of those posts.

She wrote back,
"Thanks for the info. It was worth every penny, as was the other 3 Britax Marathons we have owned.
It's still worth way more than $120, but I'm selling all my baby/toddler gear, so I must part with it.
I don't care about all the other specifics. I bought it from a very reputable place.
I will have no problem selling my last two carseats in the next few days. People are looking for high quality gear at good prices and that is how all my gear is.
Take care..."
So I wrote
"It may have been high quality at one point, but the plastic and other components degrade over time. You must not have a very strong conscience knowing that you could be killing somebody elses child by selling them an expired car seat."
I need to stop, even though I'm really tempted to post a listing telling Craigslisters that car seats do expire.

Awesome job!! They also piss me off and people are so ignorant !! I have seen horrible pics of carseats and even expired ones that they don't even make anymore.........people are not educated about this stuff, which is why i think that everyone who gives birth or adopts a child or whatever should be required to take a class in the hospital. Even the hospital people don't know jack about carseats.......They should hire me in the L&D floor lol.

it should be illegal to sell expired carseats. i sold my carseat and the lady who bought it told me she had just bought one and realized it ws expired. she was so mad. luckily mine still have like 4 more years on them

Boy am I glad we just got ours brand new ...lol

Apparently I didn't get through to her, she just listed her other Marathon from 2003. I did send her another email telling her the YouTube link I sent was of a BRITAX car seat and that they degrade just as cheaper brands do.
I flagged the one, but then I started looking around google and I don't think there's any grounds for flagging, since it's not illegal to sell. I emailed CL and asked for their stance on selling expired car seats.

Well, I didn't know either but you'd think that after being told someone would want to remove their listing. Instead she tells me it's worth more than $120 and she has no problem selling it? I understand not knowing, but not CARING? WTFE... I still don't believe that she purchased it in 2006 and it had been sitting on the shelf in the store for 3 years at a reputable company.
Raquel

hopefully CL will not allow it

Maybe car seat pamplets should be given out at first obgy appointment. Then people can learn about them early in pregnancy

they should go over it before you are released from the hospital

Wow, that is nuts! Good call on your part though. Can you report the post and then they can Flag it for removal because she should not be selling an expired carseat, even after you informed her it was expired she is going to continue to sell it and make a buck off of it reguardless of whether or not it could hurt and or kill someone elses child.

When we left, we were encouraged to take the seat and get it inspected. Also the nurses who checked us out showed us the proper way to buckle Kyler in. It was good, because I wasn't totally sure.
When I went to get our new Evenflo inspected after we got it a few weeks ago, I filled out the paperwork and one of the girls there went over it. Some guy asked if how everything looked and she said something like "well, we have a 16 month old who weighs 25lbs and she still has him facing backwards. I'll go ahead and take it out so we can turn it around." I was like "NO! I don't want him facing forward". The guy asked what the rear facing weight limit was on the seat and I told him 35lbs. Then the other people there explained to the new girl that you want to encourage people to keep their child rfing until they reach the limit. I was shocked that someone there (that I assumed was in training? or maybe just there to help with paperwork?) would say that about turning it.

Okay just read the Flagging part. I would post another add, spinning off of hers to warn others that they are expired seats! Because not everyone might know about the expiration and they might buy them from her.

As far as I can tell, it's not actually illegal :(
From what I can tell, it would be illegal to USE an expired one, but not to sell it. I did find something from California saying it's illegal to sell it if it's been in an accident.
It sucks that her seats LOOK like they are in good condition. It'll probably make people more willing to buy them.

maybe if we all flag it and email cl they will do something about it

I sent her an email.
Hmmm…. Nice looking car seat, however I am not paying a dime for an expired car seat. My child’s life is worth more then $120.00.
I pity the person who pays the money for the expired seat and if you had any moral responsibility you would remove the ad.

People will sell anything to make money. I don't know which is worse, that, or the recalled Simplicity crib I saw a few days ago. The person acknowledged that it was recalled. They said they bought it for $299 or whatever from BabyDepot.com and then when the recall was announced they got a full refund. Now they are selling it as a toddler bed for $150, even though they include the recalled drop side...
They ended up buying another convertible crib with the recall money, so they didn't need to save it to use!! Ooh, so you

I've never seen expired car seats on CL...but I've also never bought a carseat off of there so I wouldn't know.
I won't buy any baby items on CL after the lady that got murdered...that was local to me and I'm surprised anyone would even think of buying baby stuff off there at this point.

Raquel, you didn't see the news report? It made national headlines. A girl tried to buy some baby stuff off CL and when she went to meet the lady, she was murdered and her baby was cut out of her, and he died later. It was really messed up. Here's a link to the story

I had a post written out and I accidentally X'd out of the window, crap. Anyway, the lady wrote back to me
"just shut up - I would continue using this for my own children for years without a second thought."
Well then... I want to write back something about valuing her childrens lives but I think I'll let it drop.
OMG I never heard about that murder. That's just horrible. I just bought our double stroller off of there on Tuesday. From the way things were looking for a few days I thought I'd be going alone but DH ended up going with. Even though everything was fine, I'm glad he did now.
Kasey that's awesome! I haven't heard back from CL but I hope they at least start making people put expiration dates on car seats they list.

OMG Kasey I can't believe she flagged YOUR posting and had it removed!!! I never heard back from Craigslist. That's bs. Did anybody send you any messages Kasey?
Kasey_Lynn
07-15-2009, 04:13 PM
Ugh thats stupid! Nope I never got any emails. That is complete BS! I am going to write an email to craigslist and complain! The fact that they would allow someone to sell a potentially dangerous carseat and yet remove a posting warning people about it.m
MunkyCrazy
07-15-2009, 04:28 PM
When I was looking into their flagging rules, I saw a link where you could complain if your listing was unfairly flagged and removed.

She has relisted them but now does state that they are expired!
http://chicago.craigslist.org/nwc/bab/1289545224.html
Apparently nobody would pay $150 for her old, expired car seats. Hopefully nobody does now either.
