What is Exposure compensation? [EV]

Sometimes when we take photos we may find that they are to underexposed [to dark] or overexposed [to light or white]. You can manually change this to 'compensate' for the photos being darker or lighter. It's a very simple step and really makes a difference when getting those certain shots!

Exposure compensation is useful when shooting in 'A, S or P' modes [explained some in yesterdays Aperture thread].


Where is the Exposure Compensation button located?

The +/- button near the shutter release button and the 'main dial'. As shown in the photo below.

As you turn the dial, you will see the setting change on the LCD display on the info menu, as shown below.

To change the Exposure you need to HOLD down the +/- button and at the same time turn the 'main dial'. You turn to the left it will lighten the photo. Turn to the right it will darken the photo.

Adjust the Exposure Compensation and retake the photo to see what the result it.
