You are in an accident with carseats in the car but the kids weren't in them at the time? Are they still good? Do I need to get new ones?

My aunt got into a wreck.. with my carseats in her car.. we got new ones, because once in a accident the plastic has become wrapped and is deemed unsafe. Insurance companies will actually pay for you to get new carseats.. atleast ours did

I have always heard that also they need to be replaced.

depends on the company. Some wont pay for them if the child wasnt in it. Ours had to because the kids were in it. And I also made them replace my stroller as it was damaged in the accident too.

Yes they should be replaced, even if the children were not in them at the time. Some insurance companies will pay for replacements, others won't either way the seat should be replaced. I believe some carseats have some criteria as to when a seat should be replaced. Some specify that in cases where an airbag was not deployed they do not need to be replaced. It all depends. Some additional research for you brand of carseat and model will be the key, but in MOST cases the seat has to be replaced. For instance Graco's manual on their safeseat states that in case of "ANY" accident the seat mus be replaced. So look into your carseat manual for additional information.

Thanks again. We took the carseats out of the car, but I'm terrified to put the kids in them. Shit, I'm terrified to get in a car at all.

I had the same ? when I wrecked a few weeks ago.... the guy at the fire dept told me... unless airbags were deployed or the car is "totalled" the do not need to be replaced... unless it's a booster seat that maybe wasnt hooked in and was thrown around

why would you want to chance those carseats if their were in a wreck.. I do not care if they are buckled or not.. when you a in high or low impact.. you will still mess up the plastic..

Sorry to hear about your wreck Molly, glad you're okay!
A couple of us on here got our Marathons from this website - they are great prices right now, very reliable and my manufacture date was just a few weeks before I got it, so they are brand new! www.travelingtikes.com - I know they have gracos also but I haven't looked at their prices.

I would get new ones & if an insurance company is involved, I would put the carseats in the list of things that need to be paid for. I don't know the nature of the accident, but if it was someone else's fault, their insurance should pay for your carseats as well as your car because the car seats are a matter of safety.

Definately need replacing....regardless of whether the insurance pays or not
Alot of fire depts will pay for a new one if the one you have is deemed unsafe
A friend of mine got hers replaced that way.

Thanks, guys. I have a marathon for my youngest. I will check out that site. That was so helpful. Hubby has carseats in his car for now since mine is a crumpled mess.
ETA: Not the same ones that were in the accident. He has his own.

Good luck Molly, I would think they would have to - its basically a part of the car, legally required if your kids are with you - so I don't know how they couldn't! My fingers are crossed for you!

I used to work in insurance...and insurance is there to "return you to the state you came from"...so basically they are required to give you money to replace the damaged car with EXACTLY what you had. And the carseats, IMO, should be paid for because that is a safety issue. If they don't offer to pay for it, ask...I say ask because I had just put brand new tires on my car when it was totalled & I was able to get money back for the tires because they could tell they were new tires.

I called. They said in the state of IL doesn't require them to pay if the children weren't in the seats. I asked if there was a way that they could at least tell me if they were safe. She looked at my file and saw it was a roll over. She said in that case they would assess them and if they weren't safe, they would add them to the claim.
