Disposable diapers might be responsible for a sharp rise in male infertility over the past 25 years. This was discovered after a recent study at the University of Kiel in Germany.

Researchers used a small thermal probe to test the scrotal temperature of 48 boys wearing disposable diapers during waking and sleeping hours. Temperatures were consistently one degree higher than normal body temperature when disposable diapers were worn. They concluded that the insulation properties of the disposables impaired the normal cooling mechanisms of the testicles, and found that in 13 subjects, the cooling mechanism had failed altogether.

Studies in several countries have shown that average sperm counts have fallen by half since 1938 and are declining as much as two per cent per year.

What is found in diapers will astonish you. There are toxic chemicals found in disposable diapers. How can we be putting our children in these toxic diapers?? Disposable diapers release volatile organic compounds, or VOC. This includes toluene, ethylbenzene, xylene and dipentene. These VOC's have shown to have toxic health effects on the baby, such as cancer or brain damage in some cases. There is even a possible link between diaper emissions and asthma. There are many studies out on that. The main absorbent filler in disposable diapers is sodium polyacrylate. This chemical can cause respiratory problems as well as skin problems. Almost all disposable diapers are bleached white with chlorine. They also have trace amounts of a highly carcinogen byproduct of chlorine bleaching called dioxin.

MALE INFERTILITY Disposable diapers could be the cause of the sharp rise in male infertility over the past 25 years. It is thought that disposable diapers heat up boys testicles to such a degree that it stop them from developing normal.

SODIUM POLYACRYLATE, which is linked to Toxic Shock Syndrome and can therefore no longer be used in tampons, is the super absorbent gel in disposable diapers. You can find the little "gel balls" on the skin of your baby's bottom. It is interesting to note that employees in factories manufacturing sodium polyacrylate suffer from female organ problems, slow healing wounds, fatigue and weight loss.

TBT (TRIBULYTIN) In May 2000 Greenpeace found TBT in PampersŪ Baby Dry in Germany. TBT is one of the most toxic substances ever made. It harms the immune system and impairs the hormonal system. There is speculation that it could cause boys to become sterile.

DIOXIN Traces of the carcinogen Dioxin have been found in disposable diapers. Dioxin causes liver disease, immune system suppression and genetic damage. It is a byproduct of bleaching with chlorine gas and is banned in most countries. Unfortunately, the USA still allows it.

ASTHMA In 1998 a study showed that childhood respiratory problems, including asthma, might be linked to inhaling the mixture of chemicals emitted from disposable diapers.

UTI INFECTIONS IN BABY GIRLS also seem on the rise with an increased use of disposable diapers.

BABIES POORLY DEVELOPED OUTER SKIN LAYER ABSORBS ABOUT 48 CHEMICALS if you use disposable diapers & wipes and standard baby products. This can be greatly reduced by using cloth diapers and natural baby products.

There is no way cloth would work for us, because we live in a apartment without a washer and dryer ..we have to take our clothes to wash at our inlaws ..so we would have stinky smelly diapers sitting there all week till Sunday before we could wash them.

I dont think this is a debate either. Some parents can bfed some cant, same with cding. I dont feel like a crappy mom because cding didnt work for us. I dont think that research is acurate either. Me and dh both wore disposable diaper when little and were both very fertile. Just saying my opionion on the artical.

Once again...This thread was not meant to be a debate or a discussion of how everyone turned out great because they wore sposies. It was for information only so that people can make informed decisions.

If you would like me to start a thread in Beg to Differ about this I will.

Thank you for your cooperation.

I was just stating ... that it could be taken both ways =) I could just as easily post about how cloth diapered babies have SIGNIFICANTLY more yeast infections as well as urinary track infections =) and... I think the info is wrong... I looked it up on snopes and there isnt ANYTHING on it!

Yes but this is the cloth diapering section and it is for people who are pro-cloth diapers or want info on it. This isnt for anti-cloth diapering POV's.

just saying that sarah has had a few yeast infections and she's in natural disposable diapers.

FWIW: this next baby (no i'm not pregnant) will be in cloth alot, cheaper and once you get the hang of it its not that difficult.

Once again...this thread is NOT a debate. It is for information about some of the benefits of cloth diapers. That is why it is in the Cloth Diaper forum.

If you all want to continue discussing cloth vs. sposies, please start a thread in Beg to Differ. Or I can start it for you. Whichever you prefer.

Ok, Sarah has asked enough and you continue to debate, even though you don't want to call it that, so I'm locking this thread.

You are indeed debating that the information is inaccurate yet you've not provided any information to support that. The thread wasn't to prove that the original article was accurate or otherwise, nor was it to give opinions on cloth diapering, it was for information only!

I will start a thread in the appropriate forum to continue this debate, if you choose to provide us with that information, please post it there...
